Eric Schmidt: Australia Was Leading The World

Eric Schmidt is Google chairman. Recent news, Eric Schmidt claimed Prime Minister Julia Gillard had announced that 93% of Australians would get NBN fibre by “2015 or 2016" at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Schmidt said Australia was leading the world and praised the NBN.

Eric Schmidt said, “Australia is leading the world in understanding the importance of fibre. Your new prime minister as part of her campaign and, now, part of her prime ministership, has announced that by roughly 2015 or 2016, 93% of Australians - which I guess are all the folks in the cities, will have gigabit or equivalent service using fibre. And the other 7% will be handled by wireless services of a nature of LTE. This is leadership which I think is wonderful."

In Australia, wireless-only internet households are now estimated to comprise 13% of all users and continue to grow rapidly. The Government, in its NBN business plan, projects that this will grow to just 16.3% by 2025, while wireless proponents are forecasting 25% or higher by then.

Schmidt’s NBN timeframe significantly shortened even the Government’s own optimistic election campaign forecast of an 8-year rollout of fibre to 93% of the population completed by 2017/18. But, the rollout will take considerably longer than that, extending into the middle of the next decade, believed many experts.
